Annual Report

The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo linked population dynamics and sustainable development, and represented a shift in thinking about population, from a focus on growth and quantitative targets, to human rights and enabling choices. The ICPD ushered in fundamental changes to how governments and the international community address sexual and reproductive health (SRH), moving beyond family planning and safe motherhood to a more comprehensive vision, and recognizing gender equality as an end in itself, and as a vital component of well-being for women, men and young people.

Key Factors Influencing Contraceptive Use in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Annual Report

The report, titled Key Factors Influencing Contraceptive Use in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, identifies seven main reasons for these low usage rates. The report is based on focus group interviews in seven middle-income countries across the region. It includes a set of recommendations on how to address the identified barriers and obstacles related to contraceptive security, which were endorsed by high-level government officials from 16 countries at a meeting in Brussels in June 2012.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) presents a unique development context for the work of the UN. The country has emerged from a post-conflict phase into a period of more stable development, with the long-term goal of becoming a member of the European Union.  During the post-conflict phase, Bosnia and Herzegovina developed a framework for the establishment of national policies on poverty reduction, development, gender equality, HIV, child and youth protection and the environment.

Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control Programme Guidance for Countries

Publication

Based on the public health importance of cervical cancer and the opportunities and challenges presented by rapidly developing technologies, this guidance has been developed for UNFPA country offices and programme managers in the Ministry of Health who would wish to develop or update cervical cancer prevention and control programmes. It includes recommendations for governments and their development partners for strategic planning for cervical cancer prevention and control.

ICPD @ 5

Publication

rogress and challenges in the first five years of implementing the Cairo agreement were the focus of a series of meetings leading up to special session of the United Nations General Assembly (ICPD+5) in June 1999. The session identified Key Actions for the Further Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action, including new benchmark indicators of progress in four key areas.
