When a girl reaches age 10 in our region, her world is about to change.
As she embarks on her journey through adolescence and on to adulthood, the coming years will be crucial for determining in which direction her life will go.
She could flourish, gradually building her skills and enhancing her horizons, nurtured by an enabling and empowering environment in her family and community that encourages her to start making choices and shape her own future.
But her dreams may also be shattered as social and cultural norms and discriminatory laws and practices hold her back.
At age 10, a girl in our region is at a crossroads.
Which path she takes does not only matter for her own life. It matters for the lives of all of us.
Because we all win when a girl – a hundred girls, a generation of girls – can fulfill their potential. Human capital strengthens. Economies grow. Wealth rises.
It is in our hands to help make this happen.

Gender-based violence is one of the most serious and most widespread violation of human rights around the world. One in three women worldwide has experienced one form of violence in their lives. Research on the prevalence and characteristics of violence against women from 2012 showed that 47.3% of women in the Republic of Srpska experienced some form of violence in her life after the age of fifteen. The highest percentage of women - 39.1% survived the psychological violence, 26.5% physical, 6.4% sexual and 2.1% economic violence. The consequences that gender-based violence leaves on life, especially the health of women and their children are serious and far-reaching. Solving this problem requires committed and coordinated response of the whole society: government, international institutions and organizations, non-governmental organizations, private sector and citizens. Through the support and partnership with all responsible partners, in particular the health sector, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) contributes to the creation of zero tolerance society for gender-based violence in more than 150 countries.
Stigma Against Survivors of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina
In today’s societies, social stigma refers to negative stereotypical views of certain groups of persons such as persons with mental disorders and even some physical illnesses, people with certain sexual orientation, education, skin colour, people prone to committing crimes, including those determined by the nationality or ethnic origin or religion. In understanding the forms of stigmatization it is important to have a clear idea of the following four concepts: attitude, stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination.

Delivering for Women and Young People in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Since its opening in 1995, UNFPA BiH has been working on improving sexual and reproductive health and rights, empowerment of women, advancement of gender equality and advocating for the quality population data to be used for the development policies and strategies.
With human rights and gender equality at the core of all interventions, the UNFPA supports progress towards: (a) accessible, affordable, high-quality, integrated sexual and reproductive health services; (b) strong accountability to eliminate all forms of discrimination; (c) empowered marginalized groups, with an emphasis on women, adolescents and youth (particularly girls); and (d) policies that strongly promote human rights. Achievement of these goals includes advocacy, policy dialogue and advice, capacity building, provision of data and evidence for policy development and knowledge management.

Study „Prevalence and characteristics of violence against women in Bosnia and Herzegovina“ is first research of gender based violence against women in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is a result of cooperation of Gender Equality Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gender center of Federation B&H and Gender center of Republic of Srpska who provided resources from FIGAP program, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of women (UN WOMEN).
