Inquiry on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Reproductive Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina
This Report provides a brief overview and analysis of the respect for human rights related to sexual and reproductive health, carried out on the basis of the survey conducted in the course of 2019 and 2020.
The analysis was carried out by the BiH Institution of Ombudsmen for Human Rights, with technical assistance provided by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in BiH and proMENTE Social Research.
Population Situation Analysis in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Population Situation Analysis aims to provide an evidence-based comprehensive picture of the main population characteristics, trends, potentials and challenges which will inform development of future, relevant policies and enable country programme planning. It has been done by SeConS – Development Initative Group, a think-tank from Serbia, under overall supervision by UNFPA and other agencies in the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Official statistics were obtained from three statistical offices (Agency for Statistics of BiH, the Institute for Statistics of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina - FBiH and the Statistical Office of Republika Srpska - RS) and two public health institutes (of FBiH and RS). In addition, data from other sources were used, including administrative data, specific surveys, reports and studies.
Changes in behaviors and the projected health benefits for members of Healthy Ageing Centres in Bosnia and Herzegovina
In line with the idea of preventative healthy ageing, the NGO Partnership for Public Health has developed a series of Healthy Ageing Centres (HAC) throughout BiH over the past decade. These HACs are day centres that provide a place for older people to gather, socialize and partake in organized courses and activities such as exercise, painting, traditional crafts, computer skills, language skills, sports, singing and cooking. There are currently 17 centres in nine municipalities in BiH, with another one planned to open by the end of 2020. The UNFPA has supported these HACs and in recent years has been promoting the development of a network of HACs throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Implications of COVID-19 for Older Persons: Responding to the Pandemic
This technical brief was developed by the UNFPA Global Ageing Network to complement the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs' (UN DESA) Issue Brief: Older Persons and COVID-19, which emphasized the humanitarian imperative of addressing older persons' specific needs within preparedness and response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conference Report: Population Dynamics, Human Capital and Sustainable Development in South-East Europe
In order to raise awareness, among government institutions, non-government organisations and academia, on population trends and their impact on development in the South-East Europe, United Nations Population Funds collaborated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) and other UN agencies in the convening and organisation of the Regional Conference on Population Dynamics, Human Capital and Sustainable Development. The Conference has resulted in a set of conclusions that will guide governments and other stakeholders in the region in development of comprehensive population policies focused on human capital, gender equality and human rights, as well as strengthen cooperation on population dynamics and human capital development among the countries/territories with partners in the region.
COVID-19: A Gender Lens
Disease outbreaks affect women and men differently, and pandemics make existing inequalities for women and girls and discrimination of other marginalized groups such as persons with disabilities and those in extreme poverty, worse. This needs to be considered, given the different impacts surrounding detection and access to treatment for women and men.
Women represent 70 percent of the health and social sector workforce globally and special attention should be given to how their work environment may expose them to discrimination, as well as thinking about their sexual and reproductive health and psychosocial needs as frontline health workers.

My Body, My Life, My World is UNFPA's new global strategy for adolescents and youth.
It puts young people—their talents, hopes, perspectives and unique needs—at the very centre of sustainable development. In doing so, it supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and aligns with the new United Nations Strategy on Youth as well as UNFPA's 2018-2021 Strategic Plan.
Well-Being and Safety of Women
A new report launched in Sarajevo on 20 June 2019 gives a detailed picture of the physical, sexual and psychological violence many women and girls have had to endure in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The report is based on a survey undertaken by the OSCE with support from the European Commission, UNFPA and other partners in 2018.
Shrinking populations in Eastern Europe
In several countries in Eastern Europe, populations are shrinking. The world’s ten fastest shrinking populations are all in Central and Eastern Europe. Bosnia and Herzegovina, with
expected population shrinking of 13%, is very close to these ten countries. However, these population projections are based on medium fertility variant and not taking into consideration
emigrations in which BiH is at the forefront. This means that, if negative demographic trends are not reversed, more significant population decline could be expected in BiH. Governments
are concerned about the negative impact of population decline – and population ageing – on the economy, social systems, infrastructure, and even national security.
But what are the real causes of population decline? What are the consequences? And what does this mean for the policy responses we need to tackle this phenomenon? These brief Q&As
provide answers to these questions and dispel some common myths and misconceptions.
YOUTH VIEWS ON COMPREHENSIVE SEXUALITY EDUCATION AS A PART OF FORMAL EDUCATION
Research on the views of youth about comprehensive sexuality education, and their knowledge of and attitudes towards reproductive health was conducted for the purpose of program activities planning of the United Nations Population Fund in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNFPA BiH). The results of this research can also be used by other organizations working with youth as well as decision-makers for similar purposes.
Participants of the research were selected through a network of youth organizations and the results are not statistically representative for the entire BiH territory. Therefore, a comparison with the data of other, similar surveys is recommended for the use of results with greater reliability.
