TERMS OF REFERENCE

Position: Intern, Youth & SRH
Location: UNFPA, Zmaja od Bosne bb, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Intern will be expected to come to the UNFPA office according to the COVID-19 prevention guidelines and work remotely from the remaining days. Occasional travels in other Cantons and Entities are expected.
Full/Part-time: Full-time (approximately 40 hours per week).
Duration: 6 months, with 3 months possible extension (April - September 2022)

UNFPA expands choices and possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives. The UNFPA Country Office (CO) in Bosnia and Herzegovina was established in 1995.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of SRH and Youth Program Analyst, the intern will support the operational aspect of the Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) program component within the UNFPA BIH Programmatic Priorities of the UNSDCF 2022-2025, focusing on supporting interactions and relations with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders and partners. Namely, Intern will support communication with different stakeholders and partners, as well as organization of virtual and physical meetings including logistical support.

A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. Regular meetings with Intern and close contact via email, discussing processes and work related outcomes will lead to a beneficial environment for the Intern.

Internship assignments vary in length according to the academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of the organization. This internship assignment lasts six months (upon successful completion of 3 months probation period), but may be extended up to a maximum of nine months if the intern can demonstrate that it will award them an educational credit for a course.

Tasks and responsibilities

UNFPA is seeking candidates that transform, inspire and deliver high impact and sustainable results. We need interns who are exceptional in how they manage the resources entrusted to them and who commit to deliver excellence in programme results.

In details, the intern will:

  1. Collaborate within SRH and Youth programme team members in order to facilitate tasks and solutions to achieve a common aim;
  2. Support monitoring and evaluation, results and impacts of SRH&Youth programme through the whole set of UNFPA’s interventions;
  3. Support in collecting, analyzing documents, assessment, design and update of database of the SRH&Youth program activities;
  4. Provide technical support in interaction with Government stakeholders and partners as well as with CSOs and academia throughout BiH in order to efficiently support ongoing and upcoming activities;
  5. Provide technical assistance in regards to organization of SRH&Youth programme related events and meetings, including related logistical needs.
  6. Assist in preparation of SRH&Youth programme related materials, in coordination with programme team; 
  7. Provide technical support in development of promotional and advocacy materials under the programme portfolio based on the best practices, knowledge, experiences, linked with relevant SDG targets.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants to the internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher); or
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation; or
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Additional qualifications and experiences requested for the internship position include:

  1. Health-related Bachelor's Degree preferred, or Social Science Bachelor's Degree with health-related experience;
  2. Previous experience or additional studies on topics relating to Sexual and Reproductive Health is preferable;
  3. Fluency in English and local language (B/H/S) is a mandatory requirement;
  4. Ability to think and work logically and work precisely with attention to detail;
  5. Great verbal and written communication skills both in English and in local language (B/H/S);
  6. Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Learning Elements

Upon completion of the assignment, and depending on its duration, the Intern should have gained:

  1. Increased understanding of the UN system;
  2. Understanding of the UNFPA core mandate and policies;
  3. Understanding of the dynamics of collaboration with Government and stakeholders;
  4. Strong organizational skills for high level conversations/meetings/events;
  5. Improved writing and communication skills;
  6. Networking with colleagues and public health actors collaborating on UNFPA mandate;
  7. Work as a team member in a dynamic environment.

Financial Aspects

If you are not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation or scholarship programme, a stipend intended to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station will be paid. The amount of the stipend is determined for each duty station and will be paid on a monthly basis.
