Tuzla, 13 October 2023 –The much-anticipated SDG Week in Tuzla kicked off today with a grand inaugural event at the Tušanj stadion. Under the banner of the UNFPA project "Moving Us Closer," and in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Italy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tuzla is set to host a series of events emphasizing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the next two months. The series is particularly honed in on championing social cohesion, gender equality, and youth empowerment, intertwined with elements of food, culture, and arts.

Marina Riđić, UNFPA Assistant Representative, articulated the sentiment, “Amidst Bosnia and Herzegovina's complex challenges, it's heartening to witness the youthful vigor redirecting our nation's trajectory in alignment with the SDGs. The inception of this week in Tuzla embodies hope, accentuating the power of youth-led endeavors in crafting a harmonious future. This week is a testament to our commitment to achieving the SDGs, particularly in fostering social cohesion, uplifting gender equality, and emboldening our youth.”

Mayor of Tuzla, dr. sc. Zijad Lugavić, emphasized, “Our shared vision resonates with reinforcing social cohesion, eradicating prejudice and discrimination, and fortifying intercultural dialogue and reconciliation. We believe in the power of collective identity, culture, and inclusion amongst our youth, which is beautifully represented in this week's events.”

Today’s event, in collaboration with the Special Olympics of Bosnia and Herzegovina, witnessed an inclusive inter-municipal youth basketball competition. Teams from cities across Bosnia and Herzegovina showcased their talent, echoing the spirit of unity and inclusivity. Kada Delić Selimović, Director of Special Olympics of Bosnia and Herzegovina, reflected, "Through these events, we are shining a spotlight on the dynamic role of young individuals in sculpting positive community transformations. This week serves as a reminder to cherish inclusivity and the inherent value of intercultural dialogue."
