Jahorina / Sarajevo, 30 June 2022 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organized a two-day conference “Population Dynamics, Human Capital and Sexual and Reproductive Health in Bosnia and Herzegovina” at Jahorina, aimed to  strengthen capacities of policy makers and create their networks at all government levels to advocate for higher investments in human capital; respect for human rights, including women and young people, as well as the promotion of gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights.

Over 20 parliamentarians gathered to discuss demographic trends as opportunities for development, based on the principles set out in the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action and follow up actions as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“Addressing demographic change requires a comprehensive policy mix to help create environments in which people feel confident to pursue their family and career aspirations. There is no silver bullet. Only addressing demographic change in a holistic way is likely to produce lasting results.”, said John Kennedy Mosoti, UNFPA Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina. “The conference is a part of the Decade of Demographic Resilience that was launched at the Ministerial Conference on “Shaping Europe’s Demographic Future” in Sofia last year in order to galvanize action for enabling countries to thrive in a world of rapid demographic change“, he added.

Discussion resulted with commitments to enhance population policies focused on human capital, gender equality and human rights as well as re-establishment of the Parliamentary Group for Population and Development (PGPD) in Bosnia and Herzegovina that was initially established in 2004. Parliamentary Group for Population and Development will be committed to support the implementation of important international conventions, declarations and other norms, such as International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action and follow up as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and many others.
