Celebrating the International Volunteer Day

Sarajevo, 5 December 2023 – International Volunteer Day is celebrated on the 5th of December every year, mandated as an international observance by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. It's a day where volunteers are acknowledged, and the spirit of volunteerism is promoted. It is an occasion to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of volunteers who dedicate their time and skills to make a positive difference in the lives of others and their communities.

This year's theme, "If Everyone Did" is particularly resonant. It highlights the profound effect that volunteer work can have and underscores a powerful message: if every individual contributes even in small ways, the cumulative impact can lead to substantial positive changes in society.

In that regard, UNFPA and UNV organized the event The Impact of Volunteer Work on the Sustainable Growth of Communities that gathered volunteers, youth representatives and civil society organizations, looking to identify best practices, lessons learned and recommendations on how to further promote volunteerism in the country in the United Nations House, today.

United Nations Resident Coordinator Ingrid Macdonald opened the event and stated: “Volunteering fosters a sense of unity and solidarity across people and communities. It breaks down barriers, promotes understanding and is a powerful force for positive change. The United Nations recognizes the immeasurable impact of volunteers in promoting an inclusive, green, prosperous, and just world. I extend my appreciation to everyone who dedicates themselves to making the world a better place as a volunteer!

The event was not only a celebration of volunteers' contributions but also an opportunity to inspire more people to engage in volunteer activities. An opportunity to reflect on the vital role that volunteerism plays in building resilient communities, promoting inclusion, and enhancing the efficacy of development initiatives worldwide. This engagement happened under the United Nations Joint Project ‘Youth 4 Inclusion, Equality and Trust’, funded by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, and implemented in the Western Balkans.
